JENNIFER DUNCAN — Mixed media painter Jennifer Duncan’s paintings work their way through a “kid in the sand box” process. She begins by painting an abstracted ground with the rich colors she loves, builds layers of paint and the texture of collage, adds wax crayon, charcoal and graphite line, and proceeds by repainting. The end result is a mix of imagination, intuition and the shear joy of the process.
Jennifer Duncan always loved to create, first taking painting seriously while seeking a Master’s degree and working in Charlottesville, VA. She stopped painting for a number of years to pursue a career in Clinical Social Work, but frequently turned to her art background while working with chronically ill children. Shortly after her daughters were born, she left her clinical practice to co-own and operate a small decorative painting company, where she worked for almost a decade painting walls, furniture and murals. This experience with faux finish techniques and multi-layer glazes imprinted and continues to be part of her process.
In 2001, Duncan decided to dedicate herself to painting on canvas as a more independent means of exploring the significance of ideas, memories, dreams and images that demand her attention. She currently shares studio space with 14 other artists in Virginia. Her work has exhibited primarily in the Washington, DC area, but hangs in national and international collections.
