Matthew Alexander
MATTHEW ALEXANDER — Born in Margate in 1953, Matthew Alexander studied at Canterbury College of Art, Maidstone College of Art and the University of London Institute of Education. Since 1981 and his premiere one-man show at Library Gallery, Margate, Matthew Alexander has been establishing his place in the British art world as one of the finest impressionist painters working today.
Matthew Alexander is an associate of the Royal Society of Oil Painters and a past member of the Royal Society of British Artists. His exhibitions include shows at Nevill Gallery, Canterbury; Crumps Gallery, Canterbury; Catto Gallery, London; Royall Gallery, Tunbridge Wells and David Messum Gallery, London W1, where he has been represented since 1995. In 1992, Alexander’s paintings were included in a travelling show with stops in Paris, The Hague, Dublin, Brussels and Birmingham.
Matthew Alexander travels throughout Europe during the summer months, sketching and painting on a small scale and collecting reference photographs. He then returns to his studio for the autumn and winter to create the larger and more realized works for his spring exhibitions. Alexander states, “My main preoccupation is in faithfully reproducing the peculiarities of light and atmosphere of the subjects that I paint and imbuing the paintings with vitality and color. I try to make the paintings feel fresh and spontaneous whether they are painted en plein-air or in the studio.”
