![]() STEPHEN CARTER Stephen Carter is a ceramic artist who was born in 1959, in Chester Pennsylvania. In 1985 he received his BFA from Alfred University, in Alfred N.Y., with an emphasis in Ceramics, Glass and Metal Sculpture. Prior to that Steve had completed a BA degree in Spanish at Niagara University, in Niagara Falls N.Y. His MFA came from Arizona State University, in Tempe, Arizona, with an emphasis in Ceramics. Stephen Carter's work has been in National Group Exhibitions and Solo Exhibitions all around the US - from West Virginia to Minneapolis, and from California to Georgia to Massachusetts. Since 1989 Carter has worked in the Art Department of the University of Vermont, where he is responsible for the Ceramics program. Stephen Carter " Since the birth of my first child, my creative work has changed a great deal. My work has developed into a much more personal exploration in clay. "Currently my work focuses on my heritage as an African-American male and my role as parent. Like most people, this event caused me to re- evaluate a great many things in my life. Most importantly it caused me to ask the question, "what do I have to offer my children as a father? As an African-American, what is my peoples story, where is my "old-country". "These questions have formed the basis of my present work." |
