GLASS ARTIST MATTHEW BUECHNER - Matthew Buechner makes beautiful hand blown glass vases, perfume bottles, bowls, ornaments, fish, fruits, vegetables, oil lamps, paperweights and more.
Matthew Buechner — "To make the glass flowers, we first assemble colored glass canes into floral patterns. We then heat, stretch, coil and cut the canes into tiny disks. We arrange the glass flowers on a steel table (marver) and roll molten glass over them to 'pick them up' onto the perfume bottle.
"To make the stems we use a torch to melt canes of colored glass onto the surface of the molten perfume bottle. Next, we encase the bottle in clear, molten glass. Finally, we finish shaping it and place it in an annealing oven to cool slowly overnight.
"To make the perfume bottles, we carefully apply thin sheets of gold and silver leaf to the molten glass which is on the end of a 4-foot long 'blowpipe.' We reheat the piece so that the precious metal fuses to the glass, and then finish shaping the perfume bottle."
